γιατί (pronounced YIA-TEE) means 'why' in Greek
Couple things to know about me (beyond the quick bio requested for the profile):
1) I try to be as honest as possible (though not to the point of 'radical honesty' as espoused by Eli Loker in Fox Network's television crime series, Lie to Me). And there have been times when people looked at me with an odd expression on their face in response to something I said, and told me, "You're really honest." (Still not sure if they always thought it was a good thing. Hmm...)
2) I like asking questions. A lot of questions. All. The. Time.Questions. I teach high school students, focusing on improving reading skills. I find myself telling them on an almost weekly (if not daily!) basis, "Questions are usually more important than the answers." I tend to believe it's more important that students learn to authentically question a text, versus answer a bunch of questions about it. Because asking questions is important. Questions mean there's something going on in our heads. (Side note: I do believe there can be stupid questions. Just for the record.)
Here's a small sampling of some of the many different questions I've asked over the years:
WHY is the sky blue, Daddy? (turns out it has something to do with particles and light - check it out here!)
WHY can't I help you cook dinner, Mom? (oh the joys of raising six crazy kids)
WHY can't we take care of the baby birds I found? (so what if they were still in the nest?)
WHY is this black worm I found in the sand so big? (and WHY did dad freak out when he saw me holding it?!)
WHY did God let my daddy die? (still working this one out)
WHY do I have to learn math? (turns out, it helps your brain function better)
WHY should I go into teaching? (I supposed it was more practical than just an English major)
WHY shouldn't I stuff banana peels (and their stems) down the garbage disposal? (I think I broke it!)
Most of them were not particularly insightful. Some were cute kiddo questions, and some were a little more sophisticated. Some were answered right when I asked them, and others are still wandering about in my brain.
So. WHY start a blog? I hope to talk about some of my why questions (not limited to the ones presented above). Not necessarily answer them, but just talk about them. I hope to learn more about myself and maybe even improve upon what I find out.
*Note: Please be kind with any comments/critiques! I may be an English major, but reading has always been more my forte. (And WHY do we use so many foreign words in our language?)
